In observance of World Water Day, the U.S. Embassy Skopje is organizing a roundtable on the importance of clean water and wastewater systems. The event will be held on March 22, at American Corner Skopje (Univerzitetska Biblioteka), starting at 13:30.
The discussion will focus on the status of the three natural lakes in Macedonia: Ohrid, Prespa and Dojran, and the problems they are facing with pollution and (existence or non-existence of) wastewater treatment facilities. We will highlight current legislation in regulating water treatment, and real challenges in its implementation: what we have in place, what we are missing, and how to overcome problems.
Speakers include:
1. Kris McElwee, M.S. in Marine Resource Management and a public affairs officer at the Embassy. Ms. McElwee worked for 10 years at National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration on water quality issues.
2. Katarina Georgievska, Regional Environmental Center Country Director
3. Prof. Svetislav Krstic, Faculty of Natural Sciences–Institute of Biology
4. Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning representative (TBC)
